Visual Art · Music · Dance · Theatre vocabulary organized by tiers with SDAIE supports + ELL teaching strategies

Tier 1 — Everyday/High-Frequency Words

Words students already know from daily life. In an arts context: 'color,' 'line,' 'scissors,' 'paper.' Multilingual learners have receptive understanding but may not know these words in English. Benefit from visual confirmation and cognate connections.

Tier 2 — Academic Cross-Curricular Words

High-utility words appearing across multiple disciplines (science, math, ELA, art). Examples: 'balance,' 'contrast,' 'proportion,' 'value,' 'form.' Essential for academic discourse. Highest-priority for explicit instruction. Many have Spanish cognates.

Tier 3 — Domain-Specific Art Vocabulary

Vocabulary unique to visual arts, rarely encountered outside art class. Examples: 'brayer,' 'armature,' 'contour line,' 'chiaroscuro,' 'gesso.' Require most explicit instruction with visual supports, demonstrations, and repeated exposure. Use Marzano's six-step process.
